Obituary

Douglas Edward Witt, 72, of Salem, Virginia went home to be with the Lord on July 15, 2020. He was the son of Lottie Francisco Witt Reynolds and Burney Edward Witt, who preceded him in death. He was also preceded in death by several aunts and uncles, and one cherished niece, Angie Alexander.
Left behind to celebrate his life and mourn his passing is his wife of 35 years, Herlinda Javier Witt and his beloved children and their spouses: Dana Ellen Robertson (Todd), Cristi Marie Magee (Brannon), Rachel Alisia Witt, Elena Christine Witt, Edward Witt (Veronica) and his sister Bonny J Alexander. Also surviving are his precious grandchildren, Aaron Atkins, Landon Witt, Alexis Witt, Allison Witt and his nephew Jeff Alexander (Christine) and their children, Cody (Loren) and Cayla Alexander and several cousins and friends, along with his little sidekick, mixed terrier, Miracle.
Doug attended New Creation Ministries in Salem, VA. He was manager of WEL, Inc., from Concord, Virginia, a job he truly loved and enjoyed. It was hard work that challenged him, but it came with a lot of gratification. Doug was a veteran of the Army. He served in Vietnam, where he received the Purple Heart and the Combat Infantry Badge. His second tour of duty in the Army was served in Berlin, Germany.
Family and friends are invited to a graveside service at 11 a.m. on Saturday, July 18, 2020, at Sherwood Memorial park, in the Veteran’s section of the cemetery.
In lieu of flowers, donations in Doug’s name may be made to New Creations Ministries, C/O Building Fund, 202 East 3rd St., Salem VA 24153.
The family would also like to thank the staff of Blue Ridge Cancer Center and Good Samaritan Hospice for their loving care of Doug.

To all who view this and to all who knew my precious Doug I want to thank you for the love you showed our family. Doug was a very good man, kind and patient. During this time of grief I failed to mention my side of the family in Texas. They too knew him from my mother and father to all my sisters and brothers. They thought the world of him...especially my mother! In her eyes he could do no wrong and I was told to take good care of him always. I did my very best and I will miss him so much. I am so happy to have been part of his family and for him to be part of mine. I thank my sister Janie and my brother Frank for making the long trip from Texas to be here for us. I pray this pain in my heart will ease with time. I love you so much Doug and will miss you always! My cherub!

When I think of Doug, I see his smile and his mischievous look especially when it came to Herlinda and his girls. You could tell he had a heart of gold and his wife and family were the center of his life. I know the days ahead will be lonely and sad so you all will be in my prayers. Connie Mullins

My deepest condolences to Doug’s family and friends. We first became acquainted as classmates in the Class of 1966 at Northside High School. Doug was a standout guy, as a student, athlete, and friend to many. I am sorry to have missed contact with him in these later years as he continued to be a standout guy as a veteran, husband, father, professional, and man of God. But I was blessed to have a last conversation with Doug on his front porch last summer and again see that trademark smile!
