The Summer of 1970

It was early spring, 1970. A pal and I were riding around in my new VW Beetle. I was in the process of getting over a broken heart after my first girlfriend and I had broken up. Yes, after all these years, it does sound silly. But it was true. So my pal and I pulled into Lendy's on Melrose. And there, first car to the left, were two young ladies. We pulled in and talked. The passenger's name was Bonnie. And Pat was driving. They were cousins. We got in their car, me in the backseat with Bonnie, my pal up front with Pat. And soon Pat was driving. To this day I've never ridden with anyone else who made going over 12 O'Clock Knob as much fun as a roller-coaster ride. But almost immediately, Pat took on the role of sneaking Bonnie out of her house to bring her to meet me. Bonnie was too young to date "officially" but it was okay for her to go out with Pat. Bonnie and I would plan a time and place. Pat brought her to meet me and I would get Bonnie back in time for Pat to take her home. That went on for a few months until Bonnie and I did begin dating. I met her parents for the first time on Thursday 01/14/71 and our first "official" date was Saturday 01/16/71. As Bonnie and I spent more time together, I saw less of Pat. But if it wasn't for Pat, I wouldn't have met Bonnie. And we would have never gotten married. And that's a story of seven years, two months, and twenty-four days of happy memories. Life is an amazing adventure. People you often know for the least amount of time can have the greatest legacy in your life. Pat was one of those people and my life was made so much better for her having been part of it, for sharing her life with mine, if only for that short time. I'll miss you, Pat. Thanks for the happy memories.
