Our loving mother, Harriett Duke, born on Saturday, November 1, 1930, left us peacefully on Saturday, November 12, 2016, surrounded by her loving family.

Harriett was a lifelong Salemite.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Cline and Effie Reynolds; her first husband, Frank “Peanut” Hammersley; second husband, Homer Duke; and sister, Betty Lou Thompson.

Her surviving family includes her sister, Mildred “Sissy” Sowers; children, Rosie (Johnny) Bland, Charlie (Dianne) Hammersley, Debbie (Junior) Jones, Susie (Earl) Cook, Steve (Tonya) Duke, and Melinda (Tony) Brinkley; grandchildren, Lisa Canaday, Sherry Brown, Kevin Lambert, Lesley Owen, Charlie Hammersley, Jr., Chris and Jason Dudding, Travis Jones, Shannon, Kevin, and Jessica Cook, Brad and Tyler Duke, and Austin and Casey Epperley; great-grandchildren and their spouses, Aaron Bland, Cameron, Luke, and Nick Owen, Alexis and Sophia Hammersley, Jade Dudding, Hayden Carter, Dameon Dudding, Tanner Jones, and Seth Testerman; one great-great-grandchild, Josiah Casey; numerous nieces and nephews; her beloved cat, Gracie; and many friends whom she loved dearly.

A period of visitation will be held from 6 to 8 p.m. on Tuesday, November 15, 2016, in the John M. Oakey & Son Chapel in Salem. A funeral service will be conducted at 2 p.m. on Wednesday, November 16, 2016, also in the chapel, with Rev. Ben Lockhart officiating. Interment will immediately follow at Sherwood Memorial Park.
