Obituary for Roger Dwayne Roberts

Mr. Roger Dwayne Roberts, 78, passed away on Monday, August 1, 2016 after courageously battling a long illness. He was born in Roanoke, Va. on January 30, 1938. He was the seventh child of his loving parents, the late H. L. Roberts, founder of Lakeside Amusement Park, and Mary Garst Roberts. He was also preceded in death by his siblings, Harold Gray Roberts, Arnold Linwood Roberts, Herman Elbyrne Roberts, Imogene Roberts Stewart and Beverly Ray Roberts; by his son, Roger "Buddy" Roberts; by his first wife, Martha Roberts; and his second wife, Carol Roberts.
He is survived by his son, Mark Roberts; his daughter, Cheryl Roberts; and his sister, Betty Roberts Stanley; along with many nieces and nephews.
As a child, Roger and his family enjoyed spending time at Roberts Swimming Pool on Lee Highway and the many activites at Lakeside. Throughout the years, Roger's enthusiasm and fascination for riding the roller coaster or the train and swimming in the pool at Lakeside evolved and he acquired a vast knowledge of the intricate details of running a business. After the death of his father, Roger and his siblings carried on the legacy of their father by sharing ownership of Lakeside and by serving in vital roles in maintaining and managing Lakeside. After Lakeside closed, Roger became a very successful entrepreneur. He owned and managed Diamond Point Real Estate and Bail Management serving Roanoke and surrounding areas. His diversity in business contributed to his success throughout the years.
Roger and his siblings used to spend winters in Hollywood, Fla. from childhood and throughout their adult lives. He maintained close and valued friendships in that area all his life. While spending time there, Roger developed a passion for boxing and fought Golden Gloves. He became an avid fan of that sport.
In recent years, Roger loved living in downtown Roanoke where he enjoyed the local businesses and the activities that downtown provided. Having lived in Roanoke and Salem, he cultivated many friendships in the community throughout his life. He always appreciated the kindness of his family and friends. Many will always remember his sweet, gentle spirit and the love and generosity that he shared with others. He was well respected and loved deeply by his friends and family. He did so many things for so many people during his life and his greatest and most important role in life was being a father! He will be missed by all that knew him.
Visitation will be from 5 to 8 p.m. on Wednesday, August 3, 2016 at John M. Oakey & Son Funeral Home in Salem. A memorial service will be at 11 a.m. on Thursday, August 4, 2016 at Salem Baptist Church. Interment will follow at Sherwood Memorial Park.
