SGM Phillip Wayne Turpin, 73, of Salem, passed in his sleep on Monday, October 27, 2014. Forever, those who knew him will celebrate his life, his military career, his fellowship, and his dedication to many a Veteran and friend, far and wide. He served our country with pride and dedication in Korea, Vietnam, and Desert Storm as well as long after with his fellow veterans and supporters. With a genuine spirit of service, a hope that stood strong even in the face of life’s tragedies, a laughter, song, and dance to keep moving forward, he held a deep faith that peacefully carried him into eternity. He was preceded in death by his parents, Hobart Hampton and Daisy Louise Turpin; parents-in-law, Edith and Ermine Mullins; wife, Bonnie Marie Turpin; child, Kimberly Sue Turpin; twin sister, Phyllis E. Overstreet; sister, Betty Six Miles; baby sister, Caroline; brother, Joe Turpin; sister-in-law, Kathy Sue Mullins; nephew-in-law, Kevin Wayne Ferguson; and second niece-in-law, Tiffany Lawhorn Allen. He is survived by his two daughters, Michele Lee Turpin and Lisa Marie Primus (former Captain in USAF Nurse Corps); grandchildren, Lauren Alakae Okimoto and Alexandra Marie Okimoto; sister, Iris Genevieve Moore; in-laws, Teresa and Tony Spraker, Nancy and Jerry Ferguson, and Bill and Maryann Mullins; many nieces and nephews and grand-nieces and grand-nephews and their spouses including, Mark D. Price, Terry L. Robertson, Alicia M. Reyes, Robin Miles, Chelsea Sumi Kubo, Patricia Kei Kubo, Timothy Wayne Six, Steven Edgar Six, Linda Moore Padgett, Cathy Foley, Tommy Waldrin, Gina Doyle, Traci and Matt Sheffey, Tyler Bunn, Lexi Sofia Sheffey, Carol and Rodney Lawhorn, Billy Mullins, and Desiree Barr. The family thanks his loving extended family, fellow veterans, and friends who've lifted him, making his life so full, showered with great love, and honored together in great service. The family also thanks the kind and wonderful doctors, nurses, and staff who supported him through this last phase of his life, particularly the Home-based Primary Care Team, Community Living Center, and Palliative Care Team at the Salem V.A. Medical Center along with his recent home and care at The Salem Terrace at Harrogate. A period of visitation will be held on Thursday, October 30, 2014 from 6 to 8 p.m. at the John M. Oakey & Son Funeral Home Chapel in Salem. Immediately following the visitation, a celebration reception will be held at the DAV-3 Lounge located at 2381 Roanoke Boulevard in Salem until 10 p.m. The funeral service will be held on Friday, October 31, 2014 at 11 a.m., also in the chapel, with full military honors being provided by the Army National Guard and DAV-3. Flowers are appreciated and donations may be made in his name to the DAV at 2381 Roanoke Boulevard in Salem, VA 24153. The Turpin family is being served by John M.
