Mary Neal Simpson  Bennett
Mary Neal Simpson Bennett, 76, of Roanoke, went to be with her heavenly father on Wednesday, September 21, 2016. She was born in Roanoke, Virginia on November 7, 1939 to the late Neal and Capitola Simpson. In addition to her parents, she was predeceased by her sister, Kathrine Simpson Conduff.
Mary was a 1958 graduate of Jefferson High School. She then went on to graduate from James Madison College. Mary continued her education at the Medical College of Virginia receiving a degree in Medical Technology. Mary traveled the United States working in San Francisco, CA, Chapel Hill, NC, and Orlando, FL. She later returned back to her hometown where she retired as the Director of The American Red Cross. In her retirement she volunteered at the Jefferson Center, Center in the Square, and the Roanoke Civic Center. Mary was a member of the Daughters of The American Revolution and the Colonial Dames. Mary was a truly selfless person who cherished her family and had a special bond with animals.
Those left to cherish her memory are nephew, Dr. J Howard Conduff, Jr. and wife Nancy of Floyd, VA; niece, Mary Kathrine Conduff Bates and husband Kirk of Roanoke, VA; great-nephews, Joseph Howard Conduff III and Justin Neal Conduff of Floyd, VA; great-nieces, Kathrine Nicole Bates and Hannah Glenn Bates of Roanoke, VA; and cousin, Yancey Swearingen and wife Carolyn of San Antonio, TX. The family wishes to thank caregiver Valerie Saunders and her children, Xavian, Elijah, and Mykalah, and caregiver Angie Dowe for their excellent care in Mary’s last years. The family also wishes to thank Good Samaritan Hospice and The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints.
The family will receive friends on Saturday, September 24, 2016 from 9:30 until 10:30 am at John M. Oakey & Son Funeral Home in Salem. A graveside service will follow at 11 am at Sherwood Memorial Park in Salem, with Bishop Horchler presiding. In lieu of flowers the family requests donations be made to F.E.R.A.L.
