Obituary for Patrick Campbell Buchanan Sr.

Patrick Campbell Buchanan Sr.
Patrick Campbell Buchanan, Sr., 90, died December 13, 2015, at Salem Terrace in Salem, VA.

Born in Abingdon, VA. on December 8, 1925, he was the son of the late John Preston Buchanan, Sr., and Annabel Morris Buchanan. Raised in Marion, VA, he moved to Richmond, VA and graduated from Thomas Jefferson High School in 1943, ultimately receiving his B.A. from the College of William and Mary in 1950. He served in combat in the United States Army in World War II, and the Korean Conflict, receiving his Honorable Discharge in 1951.

Following his military service he worked at the Williamsburg Theatre in Williamsburg, VA, prior to entering federal service in 1952. He served as a career intelligence officer in such places as Saipan, N.M.I., the Republic of Viet Nam, and Bogota, Columbia, finally serving as a consultant until his retirement.

He appreciated music, particularly traditional New Orleans jazz, and he was an enthusiastic singer, especially on long car trips with his family. Known for his great wit and his sense of humor, he was also an avid reader, a habit which he passed on to each of his sons. Most important to him were his family and his friends, in relationships that he continued to cultivate all of his life.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his brother, John Preston Buchanan, Jr., and his sisters, Eleanor Buchanan Crounse and Annabel Buchanan Stainback Brown.

Surviving are his wife of 67 years, Hilda Bateman Buchanan, of Salem; four sons, Patrick C. Buchanan, Jr., and his wife, Patty Powell, of Roanoke; John P. Buchanan, and his wife, Elizabeth, of Fredericksburg; Bruce C. Buchanan, and his wife, Judy, of Kernersville, NC; David S. Buchanan, and his wife, Michele, of Ponte Vedra Beach, FL; seven grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; and numerous nieces and nephews, great-nieces and great-nephews.

A memorial service will be held in Williamsburg, on a date to be announced.

Interment will be in the Williamsburg Memorial Park.

Those who wish may make memorials to the military veterans group of their choice.
