Obituary for Melvin Leroy Winslow

Melvin L. Winslow, 85, of Roanoke, passed away Sunday, September 14, 2014.

He was born in Tyrone, PA, a son of the late Melvin C. and Anna Pletcher Winslow and had resided in Falls Church, VA for over 35 years prior to relocating to the Roanoke/Salem area 17 years ago. He was a veteran of the US Army and was employed as an electronics technician with the Fairfax County School System prior to retiring. Melvin was a member of the First United Methodist Church in Salem, the Fairfax American Legion and the Centreville Moose Lodge.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a brother, Harry Alvin Winslow, and by two sisters, Mary Mae Sipes and Dorothy Jane Williams.

He is survived by his loving wife of 64 years, Jane Furst Winslow; two sons, Herbert Winslow and wife Carolyn, Kenneth Winslow and wife Linda; eight grandchildren; six great-grandchildren, and several nieces and nephews.

Memorial services will be held at 2PM, Thursday, September 25, 2014 at the Chapel of John M. Oakey & Son Funeral Home, Salem. The Revs. Stephen G. Bray and Bobby Pickle, and Chaplain Roy Miller will officiate with military rites following. Interment will be held at Cedar Hill Cemetery in Mill Hall, PA on Saturday, September 27, 2014 at 1 PM. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions in Melvin’s memory may be made to the charity of the donor’s choice.
