Obituary for John "Johnny" Lewis Jackson

John "Johnny" Lewis Jackson
John "Johnny" Lewis Jackson, 77, of Roanoke, departed from this world to Heaven into the loving arms of Jesus and family on Tuesday, July 1, 2014 at his home. He was born on July 9, 1936, son of the late
Walter Jackson and Mazie Bess Jackson.

He is survived by his wife of 48 years, Princess "Penny" Hatcher Jackson; his two daughters and sons-in-law, Wendy and Brandon Moulse and Carol and Brian Caldwell; and four grandsons, Benjamin and Joshua Moulse and Ethan and Eli Caldwell. He is also survived by his siblings, Doris Neal and her husband, Jimmy, Raymond Jackson and his wife, Dot, and Eunice Neighbors; and all of his beloved nieces, Debbie, Karen, Kim, Cathy, Susan, and Pam.

He fought a long battle with cancer and amazed everyone with his cheerful spirit and smile even when he felt the worst. He retired from Akzo Nobel with 40 years of service. He loved fishing, woodworking, playing with his grandsons, and gardening, especially his beautiful flowers. He dearly loved his church, Woodside Evangelical Presbyterian, in which he devoted many hours of service.

They called him "Turtle" at the plant where he worked. We never could get him to tell us why. It seems fitting, though, because when we think of the fable of the "Tortoise and the Hare," the moral of that story was slow and steady gets the job done. Of all of life's lessons Daddy taught us, the most important was to always do a job the best that you can by working hard and always finish what you start.

We shed tears because he is gone from our sight and will miss his warm hugs, but we smile with joyful hearts. There is joy for the release of his body from the pain, for the love that he is experiencing now in heaven, and for the fact that we'll all be together again.

The family will receive friends on Thursday, July 3, 2014 from 6 to 8 p.m. in the John M. Oakey & Son Funeral Home in Salem. A funeral service will then be held on Saturday, July 5, 2014 at 11 a.m. in the funeral home’s chapel with The Rev. Bruce Robinson officiating. Interment will follow at Sherwood Memorial Park. The Jackson family is being served by John M. Oakey & Son Funeral Home in Salem, 540-389-5441.
