Obituary for Donald E. "Donnie" Osborne

Donald E. “Donnie” Osborne, 63, of Salem, passed away suddenly on Thursday, June 27, 2013.
He was born on October 11, 1949 at Harman, VA, a son of Louise W. Osborne and the late Ted Osborne, Sr. Donnie was a graduate of Grundy Senior High School and was voted Most Valuable Football Player in 1967. He was a graduate of Emory & Henry College and was a member of the Phi Gamma Phi fraternity. He worked as a teacher and coach and was employed in the coal industry. For the past several years he was the devoted caregiver to his mother. Donnie was enthusiastic about sports, especially the Cincinnati Reds, and enjoyed reading and music. He was a member of Buchanan First Presbyterian Church, attended Raleigh Court Presbyterian Church, and was an active board member of the Ridgewood Farm Condo Association. In addition to his father, he was preceded in death by two brothers, Ted, Jr. and James, and a sister, Anne.
He is survived by his mother, Louise Osborne of Salem; a brother, David Osborne and wife Linda of Mableton, GA; two sisters, Mary Virginia Lester of Roanoke, VA and Linda Hash of Bluefield, VA; and a sister-in-law, Judy Osborne of Grundy, VA. He was the fun loving uncle of several nieces and nephews, and several great nieces and nephews. He is also survived by his special friend, Ruby Bartonico of the Philippines.
A memorial service will be held at 3PM, Sunday, June 30, 2013 in the Chapel of John M. Oakey & Son Funeral Home, Salem. Pastor Chris Kingery will officiate. The family will receive friends for one hour prior to the service at the funeral home. In lieu of flowers memorial contributions may be made to the Salem Food Pantry, 620 Chapman St. Salem, VA 24153 or to the Salem Rescue Squad, 201 South Broad St. Salem, VA 24153.
