Zebulon Vance Hooker, II, passed away April 8th, 2011. He was ninety years old.
He lost his wife of forty-five years, Patricia Hooker, in 1993 and a daughter, Elizabeth ("Liza") in 1999. Mr Hooker is survived by his son, Zebulon Vance Hooker, III ("Beau") of Salem, VA. He is also survived by his daughter, Martha Preston, along with two grandchildren, Lucy and David Preston, all of whom reside in London, England.
Mr. Hooker grew up in Richmond, VA and attended Saint Christopher's School. He then attended the University of Virginia and after graduation, he served his country in the United States Army during World War II as a Second Lieutenant. After his honorable discharge from the army, he and his wife, Patricia, moved to Salem where they raised their family. He taught English at Roanoke College for forty years. At his retirement he said "Old teachers never die; they just grade away".
He will be missed very much by his family, community and everyone who knew him. He was a kind man with a great sense of humor, a true gentleman and a scholar.
A memorial service will be announced in the near future. In lieu of flowers, please consider donations to either Roanoke College and/or The Salem Animal Shelter.
