Winston D. "Wink" Martin, 82, of Salem, passed away early Tuesday morning, January 27, 2015, at Lewis-Gale Medical Center due to complications from Idiopathic Pulmonary Fibrosis. He was born on November 18, 1932 to the late Harry and Mary Martin of Vinton, VA. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his step-mother, Thelma Bondurant Martin. His surviving family includes his wife of 62 years, Harriett Grubb Martin; daughter, Pamela Powell and husband, Benjamin; grandson, Christopher; and sisters, Audrey Ferguson, Beveline Noel, Betty Oyler, and Diane Johnson. Wink was a longtime member and deacon at First Christian Church in Salem. He retired after 40 years of service with Appalachian Power Company. He served on the Fifth District Planning Commission, and was a member of the Salem Kiwanis Club for many years. He loved golf, tennis, woodworking, and his gardening. He also loved Virginia Tech Football, and the First Tee of the Roanoke Country Club where he was named volunteer of the year. His main love was his family and his grandson. A period of visitation will be held on Thursday, January 29, 2015 from 3 to 6 p.m. at John M. Oakey & Son Funeral Home in Salem. A funeral service will then be held on Friday, January 30, 2015 at 11 a.m. at First Christian Church in Salem with the Rev. Dan Netting officiating. Interment will be private. In lieu of flowers, charitable contributions may be made to the Church Hill Cemetery fund through First Christian Church at 712 Front Avenue in Salem, VA 24153.
