Willie Burkes Hughes

Willie Burkes Hughes, 78, of Salem, VA passed away on Sunday, September 16, 2012. She was born September 30, 1933 in Clintwood, VA and grew up in Grundy, VA. She was the daughter of the late Dr. William G. and Stella Artrip Burkes. She was preceded in death by her husband, Dr. Robert R. Hughes. She is survived by her son, Craig Hughes and daughter Leslie Hughes both of Salem; grandchildren, Lillie Celine Hughes and Camille Isobel Hughes both of New York City, NY; sister and brother-in-law, Gerry and Dr. Bob McClanahan of Salem; nieces and nephews, Beth and Kevin Ledwith and Meg and Tom Robertson both of Salem and Rob McClanahan of Aspen, CO. She loved her children, grandchildren and was a devoted Aunt and friend. She is a graduate of Stuart Hall in Staunton, VA and The College of William and Mary. She was a member of the Alpha Chi Omega Sorority and the William and Mary Alumni Association. She was a member of St. Pauls Episcopal Church, the Salem Garden Club, several Bridge Clubs, the Salem Historical Society and Friends of the Salem Library. A memorial service will be conducted at 2:00 pm Friday, September 21, 2012 at St. Pauls Episcopal Church, Salem with Rev. James Lively and Rev. Dr. David Dixon officiating. A reception will follow in the fellowship hall. In lieu of flowers donations are suggested to St. Pauls Episcopal Church or the American Cancer Society. The Hughes family is being served by John M.
