William Shields Haupt, Sr., age 78 of Salem, went to be with the Lord on Friday, April 1, 2011. Mr. Haupt was born on July 1, 1932 in Roanoke, Va. to the late George Boone, and Ethel Mayo Haupt. He was a dedicated member of the First United Methodist Church in Salem where he will truly be missed, especially by his fellow members within the choir where he loved to sing. His love for golf will also be remembered by fellow members at the Hanging Rock Golf Course, as well as those at Hidden Valley Golf Club. Mr. Haupt was employed with Hajoca Corporation before retiring after an astonishing 35 years of service. Prior to his employment at Hajoca, he enlisted in the United States Navy Reserves, where he served his country for a total of 12 years that included 2 years of active duty in the U.S. Navy, and a tour in Korea, during the war. He was a graduate of Andrew Lewis High School; Class of 1951, of which he was very proud. His dedication didnt cease at graduation, as he continued throughout the years to have an active roll in planning class reunions with his fellow classmates. In exception for being away for his service in the Navy, Mr. Haupt spent most of his life located in & around Salem, the place he always called home. In addition to his parents, Mr. Haupt was preceded in death by his wife of 49 years, Betty Ann Bowman Haupt, and three brothers; George Haupt, Jr., Earl Haupt, and Ralph Haupt. Surviving him are three sons; William Haupt, & wife Sandy, Stephen Haupt, & wife Karen, and Chris Haupt; daughter, Debbe Haug; brother, Robert Haupt; four sisters, Alice Wilburn, Joan Miles, Jean Danewood, and Betty Nappier; nine grandchildren, Whitney Haupt, Brandon Haupt, Tara Mitchell & husband Cory, Erik Haug, Justin Haug, Trevor Haupt, Somer Haupt, Julie Haupt, and Emily Haupt; two great-grandchildren, Claire & Gibson Mitchell; numerous nieces & nephews also survive. The family would like to offer special thanks to his caregivers at Centra Health, The Salem Veterans Administration, Carilion Health System, and the special care given to him throughout the years by Dr. Gene Godwin. A memorial service will be held at 2 p.m., on Friday, April 8, 2011 at the First United Methodist Church in Salem, with the Rev. Stephen Bray officiating. The family will receive friends in the church fellowship hall following the service where a small reception will be held. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations to be made to the First United Methodist Church, 125 West Main Street, Salem, Va. 24153.
