William Ren Hammond Jr.

William Bill Hammond, Jr., 70, of Salem, Va., went to be with the Lord on Monday, June 19, 2023. Born in Roanoke, Va. on June 10, 1953, to William Hammond, Sr., and the late Glenna Dulaney Hammond, Bill grew up in Salem and graduated from Andrew Lewis High School, Class of 1971. He went on to Madison College, now James Madison University, where he earned a bachelors degree. Bill retired from a career in social work after having worked 27 years with Roanoke County Department of Social Services. A lifelong sports fan, he was especially fond of the Boston Red Sox. In addition to his father, those left to cherish his memory are his sister, Bonnie Sue Millner; uncle, Parris (Lois) Hammond; aunt, Shirley (Rodney) Gearheart; niece, Patricia (Danny) Bass; as well as special friends, Duane and Katie Wheeling, Eddie Counts, Robin Spencer, and Greg Gereaux. Family and friends are welcome to attend a graveside service to be held on Wednesday, June 21, at 11:00 a.m., at Sherwood Memorial Park, Salem, and officiated by Pastor Roger Counts.
