William Oakley, Cameron, 91, of Salem, Virginia, went to be with the Lord on Saturday, July 8, 2023. Born to the late Oakley and Irene Wood Cameron on Sunday, February 21, 1932, in Lowville, New York.
In addition to his parents, he is preceded in death by his son, Gary William Cameron; his grandson, Andrew Leslie Cameron; and his sister, Judy Aubin.
He was a member of Our Lady of Perpetual Help Catholic Church and St. James Catholic Church, a Navy Reservist for 8 years, and was very involved in Pop Warner Football. He was also active in Copenhagen & West Carthage Fire Department Drill Team, Elks Club, and VFW. He also coached 8-man football at Augustinian Academy for many years. William enjoyed camping and was a beloved member of his community.
William is survived by his wife of 70 years, Jean Sheldon Cameron; his children, Stephen Sheldon Cameron (Karen) and Lawrence Leslie Cameron (Tammy); his siblings, Sally Carter (Gerald) and Chris Russell (Adam), and Michell Jewett; his grandchildren, Stephen Cameron, Allison Romandetti (Mike), Ryan Cameron, Billy Cameron (Alison), and Kristi Carter (JD); and seven great-grandchildren; and his daughter-in-law, Sherry Cameron.
A mass in honor of William will be held at Our Lady of Perpetual Help Catholic Church on Friday, July 21, 2023, at 2:30 PM.
