William Newman Boyd

William “Bill” Newman Boyd, 87, of Roanoke, Va., passed away on Wednesday, July 15, 2026.

Bill was born in Buchanan, Va., to the late Uris Dwight and Maudie Owens Boyd on Friday, June 30, 1939. In addition to his parents, Bill was preceded in death by his siblings, Ina Boyd Keen, Ada “Jeanette” Boyd Clifton, Jackie “Pete” Boyd, Tony Boyd, and Ray Boyd; loving wife of 18 yeas, Jean Klare Boyd; and stepson, Chip Klare.

Bill painted fire trucks with Grumman for many years, where he put immense dedication and care into his craft. Bill loved the outdoors. He could often be found fishing at the river or lake, and he took pride in his catches. He also had a passion for hunting, a hobby he shared with his loved ones. Many special memories were created at the cabin where Bill spent hunting trips with his family and friends. He was a dedicated father, grandfather, and great-grandfather, and his family and friends will miss him deeply.

Bill is survived by his children, Eric (Renee) Boyd and Rhonda (John) Bishop; siblings, Lonnie Boyd, Uris “Junior” Boyd, James Boyd, Ann Dooley, Audrey Barlow, Shirley Short, and Gertie Boyd; stepchildren, Danny Klare, Mary Beth Klare, Kathy Klare, Tom Klare, and Tim Klare; along with his grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

A visitation will be held in remembrance of Bill on Thursday, July 23, 2026, from 5:00 p.m. until 7:00 p.m., in the chapel of John M. Oakey & Son Funeral Home & Crematory in Salem, Va.
