Wayne Thomas Carroll, 71, of Salem, passed away unexpectedly on Tuesday, February 12, 2013. He was born on February 5, 1942, son of the late John Irving Carroll and Ola Susan Neighbors Carroll. Wayne was a member of the Peters Creek Church of the Brethren where he served on the Church Board, the Men's Fellowship, and sang with the Chancel Choir for over 40 years. He served in the United States Air Force and retired from General Electric after 36 years. He enjoyed helping others and was a dedicated volunteer through Lewis-Gale Hospital, the Salem Food Bank and RAM. He also enjoyed life, being outdoors, gardening, music, laughter, food, and being with friends and colleagues. He was a loving and devoted husband, father, and grandfather, and one who received respect from all who knew him.
In addition to his parents, Wayne was preceded in death by brothers, Oscar, Warren, Howard, Claude, Ralph, Carl, and Eddie Carroll. Those left to cherish his memory are his loving wife of 50 years, Sandra; daughter, Angela C. Bias and husband, Rick; son, Michael Carroll and wife, Karen; grandchildren, Jessica, Drew, and Austin Carroll, and Derek Ergenbright; and sisters, Ruby Yates, Dorothy Gibson, Margaret Daugherty, and Shirley Daugherty. The family would like to express their sincere thanks to a dear friend, Ross Martin.
Periods of visitation will be held on Thursday, February 14, 2013 from 2 to 4 p.m. and 6 to 8 p.m. in the John M. Oakey & Son Funeral Home in Salem. A funeral service will be held on Friday, February 15, 2013 at 2 p.m. at the Peters Creek Church of the Brethren in Roanoke with Pastor Jack Lowe officiating. Interment will follow at Sherwood Memorial Park and will include military honors.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made in Wayne's memory to RAM, Salem Food Bank, or the Chancel Choir of Peters Creek Church of the Brethren.
