Walter H. Billings, 84, of Salem, slipped peacefully away and joined his family early on Monday morning, March 18, 2013. He was a truck driver for Rowe Furniture for over 30 years and had driven over three million miles. Preceding him in death were his parents, Robert M. and Kate Hall Billings; son, Richard (Butch) Billings; brothers, James and Robert Billings; and sisters, Mary Thompson, Catherine Johnson, Callie Jones, Ruby Young, and Christine Deaner. His surviving family includes his wife, Ruth Billings; children, Walter (Bill) Billings, Jr. and wife, Debra, Thomas Billings and wife, Melissa, Danny Billings, and Susie Argabright and husband, Phil; 9 grandchildren; 10 great-grandchildren; brother, Kenneth Billings and wife, Pat; sisters, JoAn Jones and husband, Sherman, Wanda Chapman, and Geraldine Athan; brothers-in-law, Julian Cooper and wife, Katherine, Lawrence Cooper and wife, Suzanne, and Curtis Cooper and wife, Peggy; sisters-in-law, Helen Dede, Polly Louthen, and Deanna Kesler and husband, Thomas; and faithful companion, Abbi. The family will receive friends on Wednesday, March 20, 2013 from 2 to 4 p.m. and 6 to 8 p.m. in the John M. Oakey & Son Funeral Home in Salem. A funeral service will be held on Thursday, March 21, 2013 at 11 a.m. in the funeral homes chapel. Interment will follow at Sherwood Memorial Park in Salem.
