Walter Gene Adkins

Walter Gene Adkins, 80, of Salem, passed away on Thursday, October 6, 2022. He was born on Saturday, May 9, 1942, to the late Walter and Mabel Rector Adkins. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife of 57 years, Janice Jan Adkins, and close friend, Russell Gwaltney. Gene was happiest when he was outdoors; hunting, fishing, and camping with his camping group and was an avid coin collector. He retired from the Roanoke County Sheriffs office in 1992, as a Sergeant and went on to drive for Abbott Bus lines. There he traveled all over meeting new people and seeing the countryside. Those left to cherish in his memory are sons, Mike Adkins and Kayla Stevers, and Mark Adkins and wife, Ann; grandchildren, Joshua Adkins and wife, Megan and Ashlyn Adkins; and close friend, Rita Gwaltney. A graveside service will be held on Tuesday, October 11, at 2 PM, at Sherwood Memorial Park, with Chaplain Dave Vanderpool officiating.
