Virginia L. Ginny Weiss, 82, of Roanoke, died Friday, March 7, 2014 at Salem Terrace.
She was born in Philipsburg, PA, a daughter of the late Ernest and Marjorie Perks Hartley and had been an area resident most of her life. She received her nursing education from Abingdon Hospital in Pennsylvania and after marrying, stopped nursing in order to raise her children. She later became involved with the Community School in Hollins. Starting out as a volunteer, she soon assumed a wide variety of roles from Administrator, Bookkeeper, and Chair of the Board of Directors, to Acting Director. The school was one of the great loves of her life, and she was particularly proud of her founding role in the creation of the Annual Strawberry Festival. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Herbert William Weiss, a brother, Robert W. Hartley, and sisters-in-law, Ann Weiss and Dee Hartley.
She is survived by her son, Kurt Weiss and his wife Hilary Seiler; her daughter, Kristen Weiss and her husband Alex Padamsee; six grandchildren, Dylan, Nathan, Clay and Kai Weiss, and Maya and Keira Padamsee; two brothers, David Hartley and his wife Gloria, and James Hartley and his wife Marie; her sister, Kathy Rainear and her husband Ben; brother-in-law, Richard Weiss, as well as 15 much loved nieces and nephews. Her family and friends will miss her dearly.
