Virginia "Jenny" Anna Newton

Virginia "Jenny" Anna Newton, age 84, a member of Our Lady of Perpetual Help in Salem, Va., and formerly, St. Brendan the Navigator Catholic Church in Shallotte, N.C., passed away with the comfort and deepest love of her family on Wednesday, July 29, 2026.

Jenny was born in Washington, D.C., on Aug 12, 1941, to the late Joseph M. and Virginia I. Donnelly, was raised in Salem, Va., and graduated from Andrew Lewis High School. In addition to her parents, she was predeceased by her husband of 55 years, John P. Newton; her brother, T. Patrick Donnelly; and sister, Christina Charlton.

She is survived by her brother, Joseph M. Donnelly, Jr.; her children, Matthew E. Newton (Laura), Veronica N. Bandy (James), and John J. Newton; and grandchildren, John "Jack" (Melanie), Ishbel, James, and Marilyn (Anwar).

A 45-year resident of Roanoke, and 16-year resident of Shallotte, Jenny was employed in the insurance field, concluding her professional career as a Senior Claims Consultant. Along with her husband, John, she also managed a family farm, rental properties, and other business endeavors all while serving and caring for family and friends. Although she "retired" on the Shallotte River, favored among her many jobs was an additional 12 years in support of Child Nutrition for Brunswick County N.C. Schools. She was also a volunteer Master Gardener for 10 years for the Brunswick County Cooperative Extension. She returned to Virginia in 2021, and resided at Salem Terrace. In her life, she most enjoyed gardening, crafts, cruises with John, and playing games with family and friends. Abiding love for her family was manifested by her persistent determination and sacrifice. Her greatest pride and joy were in her children and grandchildren.

A celebration of Jenny's life will be held on Thursday, August 6, 2026. Family and friends may visit from 12:30 to 2 p.m. at the John M. Oakey & Son Funeral Home located at 305 Roanoke Boulevard in Salem, Va. A graveside service will then be conducted at 3 p.m. at Sherwood Memorial Park located at 1250 East Main Street, also in Salem.
