Virginia Opal Dunbar

Virginia Opal McCoy Dunbar, 91, of Salem, went to be with the Lord on Tuesday, September 8, 2015. She was a loving mother, devoted wife, and will be greatly missed. Opal went to work early in life to support her family as her father was ill. She was devoted to her Lord, her husband of 58 years, and to her family. She cared for her mother after the death of her father as well as her husband through all of his illness. She was a long time member of First Christian Church in Salem. Preceding her in death was her father, Robert R. McCoy; mother, Virgie Lee Albert McCoy; husband, Guy Richard Dunbar, Jr.; brother, Robert V. McCoy; sister, Rozena Fern McCoy; and sister, Julia Ellen McCoy. Her surviving family includes her daughter, Rozena D. Holdren and her husband, Calvin D, Jr.; son, Richard G. Dunbar and his wife, Jeania M; grandson, Russell G. Dunbar; sister-in-law, Juanita Dunbar Shelton; nieces, Gayle Rose and Margaret Shelton; nephews, Garnet Arrington, Bryan Rose, and Kenneth Rose; many close cousins; and a host of friends. The family would like to thank the Albert and McCoy families, the Make a Wish Foundation, the Brookdale staff especially Jessica, Teresa, Ashley, and Brittany, and the Good Samaritan Hospice including Patty, Christie, and Jean. A period of visitation will take place from 6 to 8 p.m. on Friday, September 11, 2015 at the John M. Oakey & Son Funeral Home in Salem. A funeral service is scheduled for 11 a.m. on Saturday, September 12, 2015 in the funeral homes chapel with the Rev. Dan Netting officiating. Interment will follow at Sherwood Memorial Park. In lieu of flowers, charitable contributions may be made to either St. Jude Childrens Research Hospital at 501 St. Jude Place in Memphis, Tenn. 38105 or to the Shriners Hospitals for Children at 2900 North Rocky Point Drive in Tampa, Fla. 33607.
