Verna B. Leme, 91, formerly of Salem, Virginia, went to be with the Lord on Thursday, March 15, 2012 at Mercy Hospital in Iowa City, Iowa following a short illness.
Verna was born on June 5, 1920 in Detroit, Michigan to Chester and Daisy Grant Ingalsbe. She was united in marriage to Alex Leme on June 6, 1942. They lived in Detroit while Al was employed as a firefighter and then retired to Salem, Virginia. She came to Iowa City in 2005.
She served as a Cub Scout Den Mother, PTA member, and was always active in a variety of church activities. She had a great love for travel. She enjoyed dancing and was an avid line dance enthusiast.
Survivors are her daughter, Sally Leme, of Iowa City, Iowa; and her son, Alan Leme, of Manchester, Connecticut. She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband; her brother, Wayne; and her sisters, Donna Hartman and Dorothy Bouford. Verna was a loving wife, mother, and friend.
A graveside ceremony will be held at 10:00 a.m. on Thursday, March 22, 2012 at Sherwood Memorial Park in Salem. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be sent to the American Lung Association at 1301 Pennsylvania Avenue, NW, Suite 800 in Washington, DC 20004 or to the American Heart Association at 4217 Park Place Court in Glen Allen, VA 23060.
