Verlie Elizabeth Mitchell Davis, 86, of Roanoke, passed away peacefully on Wednesday, April 10, 2013 after a courageous battle with dementia. Verlie was born on September 4, 1926 in Tazewell County, VA. She was predeceased by her parents, Gratton and May Mitchell; brother and sister-in-law, Howard W. and Marie K. Mitchell; special nephew, Glen C. Mickey Mitchell, Jr.; step-granddaughter, Ami Smoake; and several brothers-in-law, sisters-in-law, other family members, and friends. Her surviving family includes her loving husband of nearly 66 years, Wesley E. Davis; sister, Juanita M. Boling; brother and sister-in-law, Glen C. Mitchell, Sr. and Jane; brother-in-law, Charlie Davis; sons and daughters-in-law, D. Wesley and Sherri Davis, Gratton E. and Jackie Davis, Gene K. Davis, Barry M. and Reba Davis; daughters and sons-in-law, Sharon D. and Greg Edmonds, Karen D. and Darrell Overstreet; grandchildren, Chris and Debbie Davis, Kevin Davis, Brian Davis, Tammy Davis, Beverly and Jeff Todd, Angela and Mike Obenchain, Elizabeth and London Lewis, Nicole and Matt Harris, and Candace and Michael Richardson; great-grandchildren, Isaac and Grace St.Clair, Conner and Kinley Harris, and Lura Lewis; and step-great-grandson, Tommy Grisso and family. This family exists all because two people fell in love. The family would like to thank Kaye Bradley and the staff at South Roanoke Nursing Home for the excellent care of our mother for the short time she was there as well as to the Carilion Roanoke Memorial Hospital emergency room doctors and staff as well as the tenth floor SICU, Dr. Campbell, and the staff for the compassion and care during this difficult time. The family will receive friends on Friday, April 12, 2013 from 6 to 8 p.m. in the John M. Oakey & Son Funeral Home in Salem. A service celebrating Verlies life will be held on Saturday, April 13, 2013 at 2 p.m. at the First Evangelical Methodist Church in Salem. Interment will immediately follow at Cedar Lawn Burial Park. The Rev. Brian Gordon will officiate. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made in Verlies name to either the Alzheimers Association at 3959 Electric Road in Roanoke, VA 24018 or to the First Evangelical Methodist Church Building Fund at 1920 Lucas Street in Salem, VA 24153.
