Thomas Guilford Tom Sixbey, 77, of Salem, passed away Wednesday, June 6, 2018. He was born in New Jersey, the son of the late Carlton Buck Sixbey and Bernice Ruth Sixbey and had been a Salem area resident for the majority of his life. He graduated from Andrew Lewis High School, earned his Bachelors degree from Virginia Tech, and a Masters degree from Lynchburg College. While at Andrew Lewis he meet an older woman, Constance Connie Garbett, they dated during his college years, married, and shared 53 wonderful years together. A truly involved community activist, Tom was instrumental in numerous organizations throughout the years. He was a longtime member of the First United Methodist Church in Salem, was a member of the Salem Lions Club, and was recently recognized with the Melvin Jones Fellowship Award, for dedicated humanitarian services. He volunteered with the Salem Band Boosters and Habitat for Humanity, was active with the Boy Scouts of America, served as President of the Parent Teacher Student Association of Roanoke County for many years, and supported the Roanoke Rescue Mission. Tom retired as an electrical engineer from General Electric following 38 years of service. He is survived by his loving wife, Connie; three sons, Steve Sixbey and his wife Christina, Mark Sixbey and wife Stephanie, and Rev. Dr. Brian Sixbey and his wife Shan. Other survivors include eleven grandchildren, five great-grandchildren, a sister, Carolyn Elaine Albert and husband Dale; two nieces, Lisa Balkom and her husband Michael, and Alice Cook, and a nephew, Carl Cook and his wife Kayl. A memorial service will be held at 11AM, Tuesday, June 12, 2018 at the First United Methodist Church with Rev. Alan Combs officiating. Inurnment at Blue Ridge Memorial Gardens will be private. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions in his honor may be made to the Salem Lions Club, American Cancer Society, the Alzheimers Association or the Roanoke Rescue Mission.
