Thelma Eloise (Ellie) Caldwell, 89, of Salem, went to be with the Lord on Sunday, May 4, 2014. She was born on January 27, 1925 to the late Clarence Preston (CP) Caldwell, Sr. and Emilie Paxton Caldwell in Roanoke, Va. In addition to her parents she was preceded in death by her brother, Clarence Preston (CP) Caldwell, Jr. and sister-in-laws, Margaret Caldwell and Hilda Caldwell. Ellie was a graduate of William Fleming High School and attended Roanoke College a year prior to attending nursing school. She was a veteran of World War II in the U.S. Army Nursing Corps serving at Vanderbilt University. Following her military service Ellie became employed with Lewis Gale Medical Center where she retired after numerous years of service as the head RN over the labor and delivery department. She remained an active member of the Nursing Alumni Association of Lewis Gale following her retirement. She was a faithful Christian and member of College Lutheran Evangelical Church in Salem where she also served on numerous church committees and served as chair of the alter guild as well. She was certainly a friend to all who knew her and will certainly be missed! Left to cherish her memory includes her nephew, Clarence Jeffrey (CJ) Caldwell and wife, Mary; nieces, Lindsey Caldwell Brunt and her husband, Eric, and Jennings Logan; nephew, Jordon Logan, and great-great niece, Avery Brunt. The family will receive friends on Tuesday, May 6, 2014 from 6 until 8 p.m. at John M. Oakey & Son funeral home in Salem. Funeral services will be held on Wednesday, May 7, 2014 at 11 a.m. at College Lutheran Evangelical Church in Salem with The Rev. Wynemah Hinlicky officiating. Interment will follow in Sherwood Memorial Park where military rights will be conducted. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that memorial contributions be made to the College Lutheran Church Building Fund.
