Susan West Hubard left this world on Monday, July 19, 2021, after 69 years of love to continue her journey. Known as Susan, Mom, or Sadie, depending on the audience, she gave more love than any words could describe. But well try. Susan loved animals. She was a vegetarian and claimed that she would never eat anything with eyes. However, when confronted with the existence of oysters and scallops, these views expanded to exclude many more beings. Her house was always home to a lost dog or a cat who found their way to her. Everyone at the veterinarians office knew her voice as soon as they picked up the phone. She was a regular at the Wildlife Rescue and kept a shoebox with towels in the garage in case any animal needed help. If they were beyond help, she would not hesitate to go knock on a door and inform someone that they had lost a pet an exchange that would inevitably end in tears on both sides and hugs from a stranger. Susan loved dragons, quickly pointing out that they were her talisman. At the age of 65, she got her first and only tattoo, an ouroboros, a symbol of a dragon eating its own tail. To her, this symbolized the life cycle and the continued recurrence of birth and death. She believed that her spirit would go on and was not afraid to express these beliefs. Such an exchange would usually happen between herself and the terrified Jehovahs Witnesses or Mormons who knocked on the door only to get a lesson in karma and rebirth. Susan loved C3PO, pimento cheese sandwiches, Absolute vodka with grapefruit juice and a splash of cranberry, rainbows, tumbleweeds and the Dude, the first snowflakes falling in the winter, the sight of lightning bugs, all things Hallow Eve, eating Reeses Pieces (the correct way), silly toys, the sound of tree frogs, Monty Python and The Holy Grail, volcanos, and anything that excited her childlike wonder of the world. Most of all, Susan loved people. She had an all-encompassing warmth and acceptance that will live with all who knew her. She loved her family and spent her life crafting a caring, safe home for her husband and children. Beyond her direct family, her door was always open to anyone who needed it. Her house was affectionately known as the Hubard Hostel and some stray human was usually occupying a room or two. You could meet her and within minutes be spilling your heart to her about your family, your relationships, and your life, which inevitably would end in tears on both sides and hugs. When once pushed to stop being such a mom, she openly admitted, Thats what I am here to do. She was selfless to a fault. She would not hesitate to make sandwiches at 2 a.m. for her kids and their obnoxious friends, if it meant they were fed and safe. She never stopped trying to help and did not until the end. She aided all of us and she continues to improve our lives through the example of how she lived. We will be lost without her, but no one ever left more love on this earth. The family will be having a Celebration of Life in the fall with details to follow. All are invited to come and share the many stories of laughter and love we shared with Susan.
