Sidney Jay Carter

Sidney Jay Carter, 61, of Salem, took her last breath on Wednesday, November 13, 2013 surrounded by those she loved. Born and raised in Salem, she discovered a deep connection early on with the small island of St. John USVI and that is where she lived most of her life. Her adventurous spirit took her on travels around the world, making friends near and far, her brilliant laugh a fond memory to all. In recent years, she especially found joy in her grandchildren. She is survived by her parents, Jeanette and T.A. Carter, Jr.; her daughter, Amber Miller Mason; son-in-law, Channing; grandchildren, Maggie and Carter Mason; sister, Treva Carter; brother, Joey Carter and his wife, Cathi; brother, Eddie Carter and his wife, Juliette; nephew, Jeremy Carter and his wife, Ines; nephew, Ben Carter; and many loving aunts and cousins. The family extends a special thanks to the staff on the 10th floor at Roanoke Memorial Hospital, Carillion Hospice, and loving friends who stayed with Sid. A memorial service celebrating Sids life will be held on Saturday, November 16, 2013 at 4 p.m. in the John M. Oakey & Son Chapel in Salem with the Rev. Lisa Meyer Vineyard officiating.
