Shelton Carey Jim Smith, 81, of Salem, went into the arms of Jesus on Sunday, January 3, 2021, and is now singing with the angels. He was a long-time member of Poages Mill Church of the Brethren where he loved singing in the choir. Prior to his retirement, Jim was employed with Kroger/CSI, where he remained faithful for 36 years and acquired a large circle of friends. Family preceding him in death includes his parents, Milton and Mehetebelle Williams Smith; sister, Doris Mays (Ted); nieces, Debbie Mays and Kathy Jones; and sister, Hilda Minnix (James). Family remaining to cherish Jims memory includes his loving wife of 58 years, Charlotte Ball Smith; daughter, Angela Taylor (Barry); son, Todd Smith (Sheila); four special grandchildren, Clayton, Dylan, and Courtney Taylor, and Madeline Smith; special sister, Thelma Nichols (Calvin); two brothers, Roger Smith (Judy), and David Smith (Donna); many special nieces, nephews, cherished friends and neighbors, and his beloved church family. Due to the circumstances surrounding the Coronavirus, a private graveside service was held on Saturday, January 23, 2021, at Sherwood Memorial Park, in Salem, per the wishes of the family. Pastor Todd Reed officiated. A celebration of Jims life will be held at a later date. Memorial contributions in memory of Jim may be made to the Poages Mill Church of the Brethren, The family wishes to thank the doctors and nurses of the ICU and PCU units of Lewis-Gale Medical Center, for all the loving care given to Jim at the time it was needed.
