Rush Barnard Horton, Sr., 83, of Salem, went home to be with his Lord on Friday, August 22, 2014.
He was born in Hillsville, VA, a son of the late Hasley B. and Helen Peterman Horton and had been an area resident for over 17 years. He retired from the United States Navy as a Radarman following 20 years of faithful service. Following his enlistment with the Navy, Barnard was employed for over 20 years in safety and security by the Commonwealth of Virginia at the Southwestern Virginia Training Center. He was a member of Round Knob Baptist Church in Hillsville and attended Gospel Baptist Church. He enjoyed fishing, golfing woodworking and gardening. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a sister, Shirley Cole.
A loving husband, father and grandfather, he is survived by his loving wife of 61 years, Betty Marie Webb Horton; a son, Rush B. Horton, Jr. and his wife Jo Lynn; his daughter, Sandra K. Saunders and her husband Robert; one brother, William Edward Horton and his wife Nita; a sister, Erna Ruth Parnell; four grandchildren, Justin T. Surratt, Audra Lynn Horton, Jared B. Horton, and Brittani M. Barrows and her husband Brian; great-granddaughter, Addison Grace Horton; two step granddaughters, Lori Saunders and Jennifer Barton, a step great-granddaughter, Ashleigh Barton and many special nieces and nephews.
The family would like to take this opportunity to express their sincere thanks and appreciation to Drs. Carolyn Clark, Daniel Temeles and Robert Keeley for their care, devotion and steadfast determination, in standing by Barnard for many years during his courageous fight with cancer.
Funeral services will be held at 11AM, Monday, August 25, 2014 at the Chapel of John M. Oakey and Son Funeral Home, Salem. The Rev. Samuel Huntley will officiate. Burial will follow at Sherwood Memorial Park with Military Honors. The family will receive friends from 6 to 8PM Sunday, August 24, 2014 at the funeral home. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the American Cancer Society, 2840 Electric Rd. Suite 106 Roanoke, VA 24018, or to the charity of the donors choice.
