R. Thomas Funderburke, 84, went to be with the Lord on Friday, January 10, 2014. He was born on February 27, 1929, in Charlotte, NC, to the late Roy and Polly Funderburke. He also was preceded in death by his brother, Don and sister, Phyllis. He is survived by his son, Rick Funderburke and his wife Carol; his daughter, Kimberly F. Woolwine and her husband, Samuel E. Jr.; seven grandchildren, Rhett Funderburke, Kari Fitzgerald and her husband Mark, Samuel "Ross" Funderburke, Kate Funderburke, Whitney Woolwine, Samuel "Trey" Woolwine and his wife Elizabeth, and Casey Woolwine; three great-grandchildren, Dash and Story Fitzgerald and Victoria Woolwine. Tom was an Eagle Scout and a gifted athlete who played tennis and basketball at Wake Forest College. In 1954 he was ordained as a Southern Baptist minister and spent much time preaching the gospel around the world. He enjoyed hunting, fishing, photography, and carpentry. Visitation will be held Thursday, January 16, at John M. Oakey & Son funeral home in Salem from 5 to 8 pm. A memorial service will be conducted at 11:00 am on Friday, January 17, at Cave Spring Baptist Church with Reverend Dr. Pete Schemm officiating.
