On Sunday, February 14, 2016, Roland Nelson Wine, of Salem, left his earthly home and went to be a golfer on God's team.
Roland was born on Thursday, November 28, 1929, to the late Carl Driver Wine and Bertha Lamb Wine in Timberville, Va. He was also preceded in death by his brother and sister-in-law, Franklin and Mary Wine.
His surviving family includes his wife of 47 years, Marlene Hosaflook Wine of Salem; sisters, Helen Shickel of Bridgewater, Doris Ryan and husband, Clovis, of Timberville, Mildred Border and husband, Don, of Wenechee, Wash.; sister-in-law, Judy Hosaflook Kernersville, N.C.; as well as many great cousins, nieces, nephews, great-nieces, and great-nephews.
Roland graduated from Timberville High School and served in the US Navy. Upon discharge from the Armed Services, he attended Bridgewater College and graduated from Madison College with a business degree. He served as a teacher at Strayer Business College, a Virginia State Bank Examiner, and retired as an officer with the BB&T Bank. He attended many financial training conferences and workshops and received much recognition during his banking career.
He was a lifetime fan of the Washington Redskins, Virginia Tech sports, Salem High School sports and a member of the Salem Lions Club where he held many offices and received the Melvin Jones Award. He was also honored as an outstanding member of the club and served many years as Chairman of the fundraising activities at the Salem Football Stadium.
He was a member of the First United Methodist Church of Salem, and served whenever asked to participate in the church programs. Golf was a great activity as well as reading, gardening, sports, and travel. His challenge for himself and for others was to learn something new every day of life.
Great appreciation is owed to Medi-Home Health and Hospice which gave loving support and care to Roland in his days of illness. This organization needs to be recognized for the excellence they provide to all families. Also, thanks is expressed to friends and neighbors who were there to support and offer assistance at any time.
A period of visitation will be begin at 10 a.m. on Saturday, February 20, 2016, at the First United Methodist Church at 125
Lewis Avenue in Salem with a memorial service following at 11 a.m. The Rev. Jeff Dorsey will officiate.
In lieu of flowers, please honor him with a contribution to the Humane Society, Rescue Squad, Heart Association, or a charity of your choice.
