Roland M. Wheeler, 89, of Salem, Va., passed away on Tuesday, August 11, 2026.

Roland is survived by his son, Daniel (Cindy); granddaughters, Cassaundra (Eddie) and Madilyn (Landry); and his niece, Pat (Doug).

Roland was preceded in death by his loving wife of 67 years, Sarah.

Roland spent six years serving in the United States Air Force spending much of his time in Europe. After the service he taught history and coached football and baseball at John Marshall High School in Richmond. Roland began his higher education career at VCU serving in several roles while there. He was hired by and spent the next 26 years at Virginia Tech serving in numerous positions. Roland was an avid golfer who enjoyed playing courses around the country. He also loved woodworking, building numerous things, and repairing items for friends. Roland was a wonderful husband, father, grandfather, and friend to many. He never met a stranger and was always very caring and giving towards others. Roland will be greatly missed by all who knew him.

The family would like to thank the staff at Brandon Oaks Rehabilitation Center and the Davis & McDaniel Veterans Care Center for all the care they gave Roland during his final months.

All are invited to celebrate Roland's life on Saturday, October 10, 2026, at the John M. Oakey & Son Chapel in Salem, Va. A period of visitation will begin at 1 p.m. and a memorial service at 2 p.m. He will be laid to rest privately at the Southwest Virginia Veterans Cemetery in Dublin, Va.
