Obituary

Robert W. “Bob” Wardle, of Salem, Virginia, went home to be with his Lord on February 20, 2026. He was 84. Bob was born on June 5, 1941, in Franklin, New Jersey, to the late Art and Lorene Wardle. After graduating from high school, where he was a standout athlete, Bob played minor league professional baseball for several years with the San Francisco Giants. While playing baseball, Bob met the love of his life, Emily Constance Yates. The two were married in 1961. In 1968, Bob and his beloved wife, Connie, moved to Salem, VA, where they raised their family and made their home. Bob was employed by the City of Salem Electric Department, serving faithfully as a lineman and later as general line foreman for 32 years. He was known for his strong work ethic, steady leadership, and dedication to the community he served. Bob loved the outdoors and especially enjoyed hunting, trapping, and fishing. He found joy in simple moments—time in the woods, a day on the water, and laughter shared with family. Above all, Bob was devoted to his wife, Connie, and to his children and grandchildren, taking deep pride in each of them. Most importantly, Bob was a faithful follower of Jesus Christ and was actively involved in his church for nearly 55 years. His steady faith shaped the way he lived, loved, and led his family, leaving a strong and lasting spiritual legacy that will continue for generations. His life reflected a deep generosity, quiet faithfulness, and a steady love for the Lord and for others. Bob was preceded in death by his beloved wife of 38 years, Connie Wardle, on June 4, 2000; by nieces Meredith Fellows and Kathleen Fiore; and by nephew Danny Wardle. He is survived by his sons, Buck Wardle (Laurie), Tom Wardle (Christine), and Jim Wardle; and by his daughter, Vicki Wardle Howard (LaJan). He is also survived by his grandchildren: Sarah Wardle Jones (Clif), Emily Mecimore (Nick), Jack Wardle (Taylor), Ariel Wardle, Ben Howard, and Isabella Howard; and by his great-grandchildren: Sawyer, Micah, Theo, and Soren. Bob is further survived by his brother, David Wardle; his sister, Linda McGovern (Tom); and by many nieces and nephews who loved their “Uncle Bobby.” His cousins, Carl and Kevin, both expressed it so simply and beautifully, “How do you say, ‘good-bye’ to your hero?" The family would also like to acknowledge Bob’s devoted friend, Ruth Wade. We are deeply grateful for their special friendship and for the care, kindness, and support she provided Dad throughout his lengthy illness. Her presence was a true comfort and blessing to him and to our family.

A celebration of Bob's life will be held at 11 a.m. on Wednesday, February 25, 2026, at the Salem Church of Christ, 401 W. Main Street, Salem, VA 24153. He will be laid to rest beside Connie privately with his family at Sherwood Memorial Park in Salem, VA.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be sent to the Salem Church of Christ, 401 W. Main Street, Salem, VA 24153.
