Robert Edward Sloane

Robert or Bob as he was known to family and friends, died after a brief illness. He was born in Roanoke County, one of 16 children, 12 whom survived to adulthood. Bob was predeceased by his parents, Willie Richards and Tazewell Edward Sloane; brothers and sisters, Grace Elizabeth Callahan, Arthur Sloane, Alice Thelma Ferguson, James Houston Sloane, Susie Pauline Guthrie, Billy Coolridge Sloane, Lydia Lucille Moses, and Annie Mae Shelor; and former wife, Joyce Gulliams Sloane. Surviving siblings include his sisters, Dorothy Belle Wilhelm and Eleanor Jeanette Griffin; brothers, David Sloane and George Eugene Sloane and wife Masako who was Bobs favorite sister-in-law. He is also survived by Joey Sloane, a favorite nephew. Bob left behind his long time love Becky Sink, whom he affectionately called The Boss. She was his soul mate and they shared a passion for all things country, nature and motorcycles. They both loved animals and rescued many strays over the years. They were together a quarter century. Her family embraced him and special thanks to the love and care her family extended to Bob. He was very fond of Beckys sister, Nancy Conner; her children, Ashley and Misty, and her grandson Conner. Other Survivors include his four children; son, John Robert Sloane; his youngest daughter, Anna Marie and husband Randy Catron and their son Andrew of North Carolina; middle daughter, Patricia Janney and husband Arnold, and their sons, Justin and Matthew; oldest daughter, Rebecca Liu and husband Raymond and their children Sarah and Simon who called Bob G-pa. Special friends include Danny Smith, Loretta Lucado, and Angie Jennings. Bob was retired from HSN, a company first known as Stuart McGuire. He was an avid hunter and fisherman. He enjoyed bowling and baseball. He loved the outdoors, often hunting with friends, but enjoyed the occasional solitary trek in the woods. Some of his favorite areas included Craig County and Arcadia. He worked hard all of his life and was quick to lend a hand to anyone in need. He liked to make people laugh. He enjoyed cowboy movies and vintage bluegrass music. Many thanks to Good Sam Hospice and nurses, Stacy, Amy, Angy, and Pat. They were helpful in allowing Bob to remain in a home setting until his death and provided essential support to his loved ones as needed. Thanks to Dr. Ezekiel Jones for his care of our special guy. There is a new angel in heaven today. Funeral services to honor Mr. Sloanes life will be conducted at 11 a.m. on Monday, May 14, 2012 in the chapel of John M. Oakey & Son Funeral Home, Salem. Burial will follow at Cedar Lawn Memorial Gardens in Roanoke. The family will receive friends on Sunday, May 13, 2012 from 4 until 6 p.m. at the funeral home.
