Robert W. Dickens (Bobby), age 68, of Salem, the love of Patricias life, went into the Arms of his Lord and Savior at 5:20 a.m. Thursday, March 3, 2016.
He was born on March 8, 1947 to the late James and Alice Dickens. Also preceding him in death was his brother, James E. Dickens; and father-in-law, Howard F. Blackburn.
Left to cherish his love and memory is his beloved wife of 45 years, Patricia Dickens; daughter, Angela Mowles and husband, Wayne; precious grandchildren, Sean, Elizabeth, and Hannah Warren; step-grandson, Sean Mowles; siblings, Rose Kline and husband, Larry, Henry Dickens and girlfriend, Jean, and Linda Jones and husband, Danny; as well as his daughter from a previous marriage, Amanda Robinson and family; mother-in-law, Lydia Blackburn; brother-in-law, Tim Blackburn and wife, Debbie; and aunts, uncles, nephews, nieces, and cousins.
His hobbies of fishing and golfing attracted lasting friendships that extended for over 30 years.
He graduated from Jefferson High School in 1965 and went on to join the Army in 1966 and served until 1968 at which time he played the French horn and trumpet in the Army band.
He was a model husband and loving father, grandfather, and friend. Robert was a loyal employee of Northfolk Southern Railroad and retired after 37 years.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be expressed to any of the following: The American Red Cross, The First Church of God in support of their daycare, and Angels of Assisi.
The family would like to extend a special thanks to Dr. Ball and the CCU nurses and staff at Roanoke Memorial Hospital as well as Shawn Best and Laith Fapa of North Cross School for their quick response and attending to Roberts life sustaining needs.
A period of visitation will be held from 7 to 9 p.m. on Monday, March 7th, 2016 at John M. Oakey & Son Funeral Home. A funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. on Tuesday, March 8th, 2016 at The First Church of God, 5008 Hildebrand Road, NW, Roanoke, Va., with Reverend Jim Minler officiating.
