Robert L. Cline, Jr., affectionately known as "Bob" and "PawPaw", 79, of Roanoke, Virginia, took his last ride to Heaven while listening to his favorite Doo-wop music on Monday, October 5, 2026. Born and raised in Roanoke, Va., he is preceded in death by his foster parents, Lemuel "Lemmie" and Bernice Epperly and his sister, Annie Lee Gibson.
Bob was a proud Navy veteran and served in the Navy Reserves for many years after his initial tour of duty ended. He loved being outdoors, planting and growing flowers and enjoyed fishing. Bob was a Virginia Tech fan and cheered them on, no matter the sport. He was a gifted storyteller and could spin a tale or a joke that would be very convincing. Bob enjoyed simply going riding and you can bet that when he did, that his radio was playing Doo-wop music! Above all, he adored his family and loved spending time with his family and visiting old friends.
Those remaining to cherish and celebrate Bob's memory are his daughter, Lori (Bill) Belanger; son, Michael Kevin (Mimi) Cline; his "favorite granddaughter", Mikayla (Noah) Belanger-McCroskey; as well as nieces, Trilyon (George) Boone and Cindy (Richard) Foster.
The family will welcome friends for a time of visitation on Sunday, October 11, 2026, from 1:00 p.m. to 3:00 p.m., in the chapel of John M. Oakey & Son Funeral Home, Salem. A Celebration of Life service will begin at 3:00 p.m., in the funeral home chapel with Pastor John Tyler Woody officiating. Those attending are invited to dress casually and wear Virginia Tech fan gear.
The family would like to extend their deepest gratitude to Dr. Andrew Fintel and his medical team as well as to Good Samaritan Hospice, especially Daniel and Allison, for their daily compassionate care and the loving kindness shown to their family, and especially to Bob, throughout his illness.
