R. Glenn Byrd, 64, of Salem, went home to be with the Lord on Wednesday, March 4, 2015. He was born on August 28, 1950 in Roanoke, VA to the late William Harry and Mary Meeks Byrd. Glenn was employed with the City of Salem Parks and Recreation, which fit him well with the love he had for Softball. His passion for the sport led him to coaching and umpiring over the years for various leagues and schools, including coaching the Dixie Debs team in the World Series and umpiring the Olympic team exhibition game. He specifically enjoyed fast pitch softball and was classified as the Umpire in Chief for the ASA and NSA associations. In January of 2014, because of his passion, drive, dedication and love for the game, he was inducted into the 2014 NSA Hall of Fame. He will certainly be missed by everyone he touched throughout his softball career! Above all, Glenns family will remember him as a loving husband, father, grandfather and friend to all whom he had met. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his sister, Phyllis Adams; and brother, Wayne Byrd. Family remaining to cherish his memory includes his loving wife of 45 years, Carol Byrd; daughter, Michelle Craft (Jimmie); grandson and light of his life, Nate Craft; sisters, Linda Kesler and Beverly Cockram (David); brother, Doug Byrd; mother and father-in-law, Juanita and Elwood Harmon; nieces, Teri Hostetter (Jimmy), Lauren Cockram and Megan Hostetter; nephews, Matt Cockram, Dougie Byrd, Jeremy Byrd and Tim Adams; and brother-in-law, Jerry Adams (Brenda).
