Richard Anthony 'Rick' Schmitt

Richard Rick Anthony Schmitt, of Salem, Virginia, went to be with the Lord on Sunday, February 5, 2012. Born on May 29, 1958 in Rochester, New York to Jim Schmitt of Salem, VA and the late Irene Brady, Rick went to Greece Olympia High School in Rochester, NY and played soccer for a year at Cortland State before joining the United States Navy. An air traffic controller for the past 23 years and a deacon at Salem Baptist Church, Rick loved to dance with his wife; together they taught ballroom dance at the Salem Senior Center. Surviving him are his loving wife of over 30 years, Bonnie Schmitt; son, Jonathan Schmitt (Laura); daughter, Anita Fullmer (Josh); son, Nicolas Schmitt (Kelsey); five beautiful grandchildren, Bailey, Cassidy, Aubrey, Jacksen, and Ethan; ten brothers and sisters, Mary Schmitt, Bob Schmitt, Bill Schmitt, John Schmitt, Jim Schmitt, Mike Schmitt, Cathy Cardillo, Brian Schmitt, Barb Donath, and Norine DAmico; and dozens of loved nieces and nephews. A special thanks to our SBC family, Friday night dancers, neighbors, and friends. A period of visitation will be held on Wednesday, February 8, 2012 from 7 to 9 p.m. in the John M. Oakey & Son Chapel in Salem. A Celebration of Life service will be held on Thursday, February 9, 2012 at 1 p.m. at Salem Baptist Church with the Rev. Everett Kier officiating.
