Richard Michael "Shorty" Mathena

Richard Michael Mathena, also known as Shorty, went home to be with the Lord on Thursday, January 25, 2024. Born in Montgomery County, Virginia, on June 1, 1946, to the late Raymond Douglas and Frances Farmer Mathena, he is also preceded in death by his son, Michael Douglas Mathena; sister, Ileada Rose Ribble (Louis Red); and brothers, Lyle Douglas Mathena and Lee Oncello Mathena (Shirley). Mike loved racing and spent many Saturday nights at Franklin County Speedway back in the day. He also loved time spent outdoors with a fishing pole in hand, reeling in that great catch. Mike had a kind and loving heart and never met a stranger. Above all, he adored his family, especially his grandchildren. Mike is survived by his wife of 41 years, Becky Mathena; daughter, Stephanie Sissy Taliaferro (Drew); stepson, Chris Kingery (Angie); grandchildren, Peyton Taliaferro, Shyanne Mathena, Josh Kingery, Caleb Kingery (Kaitlyn), Coby Kingery, Abby Kingery, Kiara Kingery; sister-in-law, Lorell Mathena; and numerous nieces and nephews. The family will welcome friends for a time of visitation on Saturday, February 3, 2024, at New Covenant Christian Church, located at 4807 Cove Road, Roanoke, Va., 24017, from 11:00 a.m. - 12:00, noon, followed by a memorial service at 12:00 noon.
