Richard Rick Allen Martin, 59, of Salem, went to be with the Lord on Thursday, December 5, 2013. He was born on September 22, 1954 to the late Clifford Jack Martin and Willie Martin. He is survived by his wife, Carolyn Martin, of 38 years; daughter, Casey Martin; brother, Bob Martin and wife, Debra; sister, Betty Willis and husband, Albe; brother-in-law, Lee Adkins and wife, Denise; sister-in-law, Wanda Hayes and husband, Kevin; as well as special nieces and nephews, Susan Phillips and husband, Eric, David Willis, Bridget Martin and husband, Tim, Tiffany Gates and husband, Ed, Morgan Adkins, Donnie Adkins, and Corey Hayes. Rick graduated from Andrew Lewis High School and was a member of Riverland Road Baptist Church. He worked in the automotive finishes industry for many years, employed by James T. Davis Automotive Finishes. Rick loved God, his family, and friends. His passion for blacksmithing and helping on the farm were fueled by the unique friendships with John Reed and Tim Martin. He was most content at home working in his garage or outdoors. He leaves behind a valuable legacy to all who had the privilege of knowing and loving him. Special thanks to Good Samaritan Hospice for their special care at home and Dr. Kochenderfer and staff at Blue Ridge Cancer Care for the care they provided during Ricks hard-fought battle with cancer. The family will receive friends on Sunday, December 8, 2013 from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m. in the John M. Oakey & Son Chapel in Salem. A funeral service will be held on Monday, December 9, 2013 at 2 p.m., also in the funeral homes chapel with burial following at Sherwood Memorial Park. Pastor Donald Summerville will officiate.
