Peggy Wootan (Tootie) Smith, 70, of Elliston, went to heaven Friday, October 2, 2015. She was born on August 31, 1945 in Rapides Parish, LA to the late Norman L. Wootan, Sr. and Margaret Boudreaux Wootan.
Peggy spent 44 years in her banking career, which started at Rapides Bank when she was a work study student at Bolton High School. While her husband Jerry served in the military in Germany, Peggy worked at the American Express Bank. Returning to the states, she worked at several banks in North Carolina and Virginia, where she gained experience in almost all banking departments. Peggy retired and completed her banking career as Assistant Vice President of Bank Operations with First Citizens Bank.
Peggy loved gardening, cooking, and crafts of all kinds. She enjoyed arranging flowers, art painting, Christmas decorating, snow and water skiing, and watching Nascar and football. She found great joy in visits with her bank family, ocean cruises with friends from Louisiana, and visits with her grandson, Morgan. Peggy had an active life and loved to stay busy. She advised Jerry that she was going to heaven first to save a seat for him.
Family left to cherish her memory include her husband of 46 years, Jerry L. Smith, Sr.; sons, Jerry L. Smith, Jr. and his wife Christina and Steven S. Smith and his wife Phyllis; grandson, Morgan Scot Smith; sister, Dorothy Boudreaux; brothers, Norman Wootan, Jr. (N.L), Larry Wootan (Sandra), and Richard Wootan (Debbie); and her pets, Miss Molly, Tinker, and Bell.
The family wishes to express heartfelt thanks to Good Samaritan Hospice of Christiansburg, especially nurses Cindy, Cathy, and other caregivers, Blue Ridge Cancer of Salem, Dr. Fintel and his staff, and special thanks to dear friends Ann and Gail Zimmerman.
A celebration of Peggys life will be held from 6 until 9 p.m., Saturday, October 10, 2015 at John M. Oakey & Son Funeral Home in Salem. In lieu of flowers, memorial gifts may be made in Peggys name to Colon Cancer Research and Angels of Assisi.First Visitation
