Obituary

Opal Sutphin Jones, age 94 of Salem, VA, went to her heavenly home on Friday, March 13, 2026, and was greeted by Jesus saying, "Well done, My good and faithful Servant"! Opal was born in Radford, VA, on January 29, 1932, to the late William Murray and Ollie Sutphin. She was preceded in death by her loving and devoted husband, Robert D. Jones, to whom she was married to for 64 years, and her precious great-granddaughter, Rowan Price. Opal was also preceded in death by seven brothers and five sisters.

Opal is survived by her children, Karen J. Keith (Buddy), Gail J. Zimmerman (Randy), Billy Jones (Mary Ann) and Nancy Price (Bryan); her grandchildren Jennifer P. Halahan (Ron), Scott Price (Mandy), Emily Z. Herndon (Patrick), Nathan Keith, Andy Jones (Jessica), David Zimmerman (Betty Cabell), Katy K. Sheffey(Jamar) and Adam Jones (Katie). Also surviving her are her great-grandchildren, Jackson Halahan, Emory Price, Calvin (Savannah), Robert, Elizabeth, and Adrianna Herndon, Brantley, Gavin, and Lilla Jones, William, and Ruthie Zimmerman, Tenaeja, Trinity, Leah-Mae Grace, Sophia, J.J., Ellie, and L.J. Sheffey, and Zander and Caroline Jones. Opal was also blessed to have one great-great-grandchild, Peyton Cole Herndon, and one great-great-foster-granddaughter.

Opal was also survived by numerous nieces, nephews, great nieces, and great nephews but especially close to her were nieces, Rhoda Hash, Ramona Whitaker, Sharon Huffman, and Judy Bonham.

Opal was a devoted Christian and lived her life sharing her faith through her actions and words. She was a lifelong member of Bethel Baptist Church, Salem, VA and loved her church family. Besides raising her children, Opal kept children in her home for many years and loved them like her own. After her children were in high school, she went to work outside the home for Creative Packing which later became Eli Lilly, and she worked there until her retirement.

The family would especially like to thank, Keith Reynolds, special neighbor, and an adopted part of her family, for all the love, help, and support to Opal. The family would like to express their gratitude to the administration and staff at Friendship Salem Terrace for the excellent and loving care they provided to Opal while a resident there. The family would also like to thank Good Samaritan Hospice for the loving care they gave to Opal and her family.

The family will receive friends and family for a period of visitation from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m. at Bethel Baptist Church, 1601 S. Colorado St., Salem, VA 24153, on Tuesday, March 17, 2026.

The funeral service will be held at Bethel Baptist Church, 1601 S. Colorado St., Salem, VA 24153, on Wednesday, March 18, 2026 at 11:00 a.m. with Pastor Hilton Jeffries officiating.

Following the funeral service, the interment will be held privately for family members at Blue Ridge Memorial Gardens, Roanoke, VA.

The family suggests that anyone wishing to make a donation in lieu of flowers to please send donations to Bethel Baptist Church Food Pantry Fund or Senior Trip Fund at 1601 S. Colorado Street, Salem VA, or Good Samaritan Hospice in memory of Opal Jones at 4751 Cove Road, NW, Roanoke, VA 24017.
