Olga Lonitz, 90, of Salem, very peacefully made her journey to heaven on Thursday, January 15, 2015 with her loving family at her side. She was born in Friedrichshafen, Germany, immigrating to the United States with her family in 1956.
She began her working career as a professional seamstress in Germany and later became a Supervisor for Maid Bess in Salem. She also volunteered many hours at Richfield Retirement Home, as well as the Center-in-the Square Museum.
Olga enjoyed traveling with her husband around the world and making friends. She liked to dance, make pottery and engage in arts and crafts. To her husband she was more than a wife, lover and companion - she was a very courageous and brave woman. This was exemplified by the caring for her children during the Russian occupation in East Germany and her subsequent daring escape to the West with her children.
Olga is survived by her husband of 71 years, Horst Lonitz; her daughter, Rosi Lonitz Martin of Chesapeake; her son, Ted Lonitz and his wife, Pam of Roanoke; two grandsons, Bryan Zentz of Portland, OR, and Charles Dudley, Sr. and his wife, Kimberly of Lewisville, TX; and one great grandson, C.J. Dudley of Bloomington, IN.
A Memorial Service will be held at 2 pm on Wednesday, January 21, 2015 in the chapel of John M. Oakey & Son Funeral Home in Salem, 540-389-5441.
