On Wednesday, October 26, 2011 Nina Elizabeth Hayes Hoye passed on to her Eternal Home. Nina was born on March 7, 1915 in Mortimer North Carolina to the late Joseph Langston Hayes and Ellen Daisy Franklin Hayes. Nina was not only predeceased by her parents but also by her husband of 56 years, Mason Hoye, her sister, Ruby Caroline Hayes Cook and her nephew Robert L. Hoye. She is survived by her daughter Susan E. Hoye of Salem VA; cherished grandchildren Alan Albert (Sharon) of Stilwell KS and Hoye Bishop (Jose Ariza-Lamas) of Seville Spain; great-grandchildren Amanda Albert of Manhattan KS, Sarah Albert of Stilwell KS and William Mason Ariza-Bishop of Seville Spain. Also surviving her are niece and nephew Nina Caroline Cook Mosrie (A.J.), Blountville TN and Joseph Hayes Cook of Austin TX. Other beloved nieces and nephews surviving her are Shirley Romagnoli (Joe), Charleston WV, Meredith Williams (Eloise), Boomer WV, Geraldine Farley, Ft. Lauderdale FL, Samuel Hoye (Ida Jayne) Chattanooga TN, Stephen Hoye (Cindy) Morrisville NC, James M. Hoye (Dee) Goode VA, Randolph Hoye (Nelda) Kenbridge VA, Nancy Mufti (Abed) Richmond VA, Mary Antons (Leo) Marietta OH, Dr. James R. Hoye (Christina), Troutville, VA. Many great nieces and nephews and many, many friends are still here to cherish her memory.
Nina was a graduate of The Mars Hill Academy and Mars Hill College, Mars Hill NC. She went on to finish her studies at James Madison University (then Harrisonburg State Teachers College). She did her graduate work at Northwestern University and Virginia Tech. She taught first in Boone County WV schools, then following her husband's company transfers, in Rabun County GA, Jasper County SC and her last 33 years of teaching were in Roanoke County VA schools where she retired. She was loved and admired by many of her students in each location and still remembered by many of them now. She was an active member in the teachers' honorary society Delta Kappa Gamma, Iota State, Beta Tau Chapter. She was a member of the Eastern Star of Boone County WV. Nina made and kept many friendships wherever she made her home. She was a dedicated school teacher and at one point was appointed by the Virginia Education Department to teach a pilot program taking exceptional students through three elementary grades in two years. This was a very successful and exciting assignment for Nina.
Nina was a company child as her father was employed by the W.M. Ritter Lumber Co. He was transferred throughout Western North Carolina, Southwestern Virginia and finally to West Virginia. Her future husband was employed by the same lumber company in Barrett WV. In 1939 she began her new life as a company wife. Nina and Mason's home was a popular place for friends and family to visit. Almost every Saturday evening friends would come to their house to sing around the piano where Nina played hymns.
Among her many talents, Nina was an expert seamstress, learned basket weaver and chair caner, lover of all crafts, and was well-known for her delicious cooking. Whenever family or friends came to her home, the table was always heavily laden with delicious food.
Nina will be remembered most for her love and dedication to her husband and her family. Wherever she lived Nina was always active in the Women's Society of Christian Women, associated with the Methodist Church. She and her family were active members of Barrett (WV) Community Church, Clayton (GA) Methodist Church, and St. Paul Methodist Church (SC). At her passing she was a loved and well-known member of First United Methodist Church in Salem VA. At First Church she taught her Della Bradley Sunday school class for many years, helped her husband with the treasury function, and served on many committees. During WWII she served the Boone County Red Cross by knitting hundreds of socks, vests and helmet liners for US soldiers serving in Europe. Outside of church and school she was a devoted aunt to her nieces and nephews, and loving grandmother who enjoyed her grandchildren and great-grandchildren to the fullest.

Visitation will be held at John M. Oakey and Son Funeral Home, Salem VA on Tuesday, November 1, 2011 from 2:00 pm. to 4:00 pm and from 7:00 pm to 8:30 pm. A graveside service will be held at Sherwood Memorial Gardens on Wednesday, November 2, 2011 at 10:00 am followed by a memorial service at First United Methodist Church, Salem VA at 11:00 am. In lieu of flowers the family asks that donations in Nina's memory be made to First United Methodist Church, the Salem Rescue Squad, or Good Samaritan Hospice.
