Nina Battle Hatcher, age 90, of Roanoke, passed away on Wednesday, May 25, 2016.
She was born on Sunday, November 22, 1925, in Autryville, North Carolina.
Nina was preceded in death by her parents, William and Treva Cooper Battle; her husband of 60 years, Richard E. Hatcher, Sr.; daughter, Joyce Hatcher Smith; brothers, Hurley, Ed, and William (Bill) Battle; and brothers-in-law, Robert and Paul Hatcher.
Left to cherish her memory are her loving daughter, Judy (Norman) Asbury; son, Richard (Donna) Hatcher; son-in-law, Randy Smith; brothers, Darden (Carole) and Fred Battle; grandchildren, Leslie (Chuck) Graham, Kristin (Chance) Famuliner, Chip Hatcher, Tanya (Kenneth) Toney, Randy (Cammie) Smith, Jr., Ashley (Eric) Rogan, and Chris (Lauren) Renick; 13 great-grandchildren; a number of nieces and nephews; her lifelong friend, Betty Richards; and a special daughter, Jackie Vess Silva.
Mrs. Hatcher was legendary for her gardening talents, so her yard in spring was a site to behold. She was a past president of the Roanoke Council of Garden Clubs, as well as a past member of Sugar Loaf Garden Club and current member of North Lakes Garden Club. For years, Nina was instrumental in providing flowers and arrangements for the Miss Virginia Pageant held in Roanoke. She was a longtime member of Rosalind Hills Baptist Church, where she regularly worked in the Food Pantry and on the Social Committee. Nina was also widely known for her cakes, providing birthday, wedding, and anniversary cakes for an untold number of events.
Nina was fortunate to have the loving care provided by her daughter. With unwavering love and dedication, Judy was by her side 24/7 for the past 3 and a half years. In addition, the family wishes to express their sincere thanks to her other caregivers, Sally Jenkins of Visiting Angels, and Good Samaritan Hospice. They provided tender loving care for Nina in her last days and were of great assistance to the family.
A period of visitation will be held from 6 to 8 p.m. on Friday, May 27, 2016 at John M. Oakey & Son Funeral Home in Salem. A funeral service will be conducted at 11 a.m. on Saturday, May 28, 2016 at Rosalind Hills Baptist Church in Roanoke with the Rev. Rick Sewell officiating. Interment will immediately follow at Cedar Lawn Burial Park.
