Nelson Jackson, 87, of Salem, Va. died on Sunday, April 28, 2024. Nelson was born in Roanoke, Va., the son of the late W. Payton and Ester O. Jackson. He graduated from Jefferson High School and served as a department manager for the City of Roanoke for 18 years. He was an active member of Goodwin Memorial United Methodist Church for over 40 years. In addition to his parents, Nelson was preceded in death by his siblings, Edward Jackson, Melba Bootie Wilson, Helen Hillman, and Frederick Bill Jackson, and his daughter, LeAnne. He is survived by his wife of 52 years, Peggy Pugh Jackson, and his children, Kevin Jackson of Salem, Va., Kirk Jackson of Lexington, Va., and Rachel Jackson, also of Salem. Graveside services to honor Nelsons life will be conducted on Thursday, May 2, 2024, at 11 a.m. at Sherwood Memorial Park, in Salem. Rev. Charles DeHart will officiate. The family will receive friends on Wednesday, May 1, 2024, from 5 until 7 p.m. at John M. Oakey & Son Funeral Home, in Salem. In lieu of flowers, please consider memorial donations in Nelsons memory to the Easterseals, or gifts of supplies to your local animal shelter. The family wishes to thank the doctors and nurses of Lewis-Gale Medical Center of Salem for the extraordinary care they provided Nelson in his final days.
