Nedra May Wade Crockett

Nedra May Wade Crockett, 85, of Salem, died on Tuesday, January 1, 2013. We celebrate our loving and beloved mother, grandmother, and friend, Nedra Crockett, who during her 85 years on earth inspired us with her feisty spirit, passion for life, tender humor, and generous heart. Nedra was born in Vinton, Virginia, the daughter of Charles Edgar Wade, Jr. and Laura Thomas Webber Wade. She worked many years as a clerk for Appalachian Power and Roanoke County where she made lifelong friends. A voracious reader, Nedra instilled in her children an appreciation of the arts and education. Most especially, she taught by example how to love deeply, unconditionally, and without end. She was known affectionately during the last years of her life as Grandma Bootie, a nickname recalled from her childhood when she ran around her neighborhood in spunky red boots. She is survived by six children and their spouses, Laura and Carol Crockett-Ewalt, Luella Crockett, Tish and Johnny Reynolds, Sam and Freda Crockett, Edgar and Laurie Crockett, and Mary and Stewart Hill. She is also survived by beloved grandchildren; nieces and nephews; and her former husband, Samuel Robert Crockett. The family wishes to thank all of Nedra's friends, most especially Maureen Jones, who was a tremendous comfort during Nedra's illness. The family will receive friends on Friday, January 4, 2013 from 3 to 5 p.m. in the John M. Oakey & Son Funeral Home in Salem. A funeral service will be held on Saturday, January 5, 2013 at 2 p.m. in the funeral homes chapel. Interment will follow at Fair View Cemetery in Roanoke. The Rev. Everett Kier will officiate. Nedra loved God and supported many humanitarian causes during her life; in lieu of flowers, she asked that donations be sent to the Lotty Moon Misson Fund at Salem Baptist Church at 103 N.
