Dr. Narendra Champaklal Shah, of Salem, passed away on Sunday, December 29, 2013. He was born in India to the late Champaklal and Prabhavati Shah. Dr. Shah was a prominent psychiatrist for 40 years, working with veterans at the Salem V.A. Medical Center, with patients at Carillion and his own private practice. He was an expert on bipolar disorder, and conducted many lectures throughout the United States in the field of psychiatry. He was a very kind and generous man, providing much of his services pro bono to people in need. In addition to his practice, he served as an adjunct professor of psychiatry at UVA. Dr. Shah was an avid photographer, loved sports and travel, and enjoyed spending time with family and friends at Smith Mountain Lake. He often visited India and remained close with his entire extended family. He was very involved in the Indian community in Roanoke as well. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a daughter, Caroline Shah; brothers, Anilkant and Jaysukh Shah; and sister, Panna Shah. Family left to cherish his memory include his wife, Susan Shah; sons, Nikhil and Neelesh Shah; brothers, Hasmukh Shah and wife Shobha of Maryland, Arvind Shah and wife Lata of India, and Pankaj Shah and wife Shalini of Pennsylvania; sisters, Sharda Shah, Nalini Mehta and husband Dinesh, and Hansa Shah, all of India; and nineteen nieces and nephews across the USA and India. A memorial service to honor Dr. Shahs life will be conducted on Sunday, January 5, 2014 at 2 pm at Trinity United Methodist Church, 305 Mountain Ave SW Roanoke, Virginia 24016. LeRoy Worley will officiate. A reception will follow in the church fellowship hall.
